If you've studied Search Engine Optimization (SEO) you've likely come across the term link popularity at least once. For those who are new to SEO, you may be wondering what a backlink is, and why its important. Backlinks have become so important to Search Engine Optimization (especially on Google) that they have become the main building blocks to good SEO design.

Backlinks are links directed towards your website. The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of your website. The philosophy is that the number of RELEVANT sites that link to your site is an indication that your site is worth paying attention to. Especially on Google, search engines give credit to websites that have quality backlinks, and consider those websites more relevant than others.

This gave birth to the link exchange program. You put a link on your website to me, and I'll put a link on my website to you! Be careful here though ... when search engines calculate the relevance of a site to a keyword, they consider the number of QUALITY inbound links to that site. So we should not be satisfied with merely getting inbound links, it is the quality of the inbound link that matters.

A search engine considers the content of the sites to determine the QUALITY of a link. When inbound links to your site come from other sites, and those sites have content related to your site, these inbound links are considered more relevant to your site. If inbound links are found on sites with unrelated content, they are considered less relevant. So higher relevance equates to greater quality.

Another reason to strive for quality backlinks is to entice more visitors to your website. You can't build a website, and expect that people will find you without showing them the way. The adage ‘Build it, and they will come’ does not apply well to SEO. You have to get the word out about your web site. One effective way to do this is through reciprocal linking.

There are a few things to consider when beginning your link exchange campaign. It is helpful to keep track of your backlinks, to know which sites are linking to you. A tool to help is the Domain Stats Tool at Google. This will tell you a few details about your website; your listings in the Open Directory (DMOZ), your Alexa traffic rank, and how many pages from your site have been indexed.

Building quality backlinks is extremely important to Search Engine Optimization, and because of this importance, it should be very high on your priority list in your SEO efforts.
